Course Overview
This 15 hour course provides educators with a systematic lesson plan for teaching students to read multisyllabic words with common prefixes, suffixes and roots.
As students enter the upper elementary grades, the demands of written language grow—and so must our instructional approach. This is a research-based course designed to help educators deliver powerful, differentiated literacy instruction tailored to the needs of older elementary learners.
Grounded in the Science of Reading, this course emphasizes the critical role of morphology, vocabulary development, and advanced word work in reading success. With roughly 70% of multisyllabic words in grade 3 and above containing prefixes or suffixes, students must be equipped with the tools to decode, comprehend, and use these words effectively. This course empowers educators with explicit instructional strategies to build those skills—fostering confident, capable readers.
Through a hands-on, high-leverage approach to small group instruction, you’ll learn to:
1. Deliver structured literacy routines that integrate semantic, morphological, syntactic, and comprehension instruction.
2. Teach advanced word reading using syllabication strategies and the six syllable types in English.
3. Implement strategic vocabulary instruction using active processing techniques and the Frayer model.
4. Teach morphological awareness, including the most common prefixes, suffixes, and root words, and how they apply to decoding and comprehension.
4. Guide students in spelling multisyllabic words through encoding strategies and affix rules (Double Rule, Drop-E Rule, Change Y Rule, and more).
5. Use syntax instruction to support understanding of sentence structure and meaning.
6. Analyze instructional videos through the lens of explicit teaching and apply those principles in your own classroom practice.
7. Plan and deliver multi-component Structured Literacy lessons that focus on morphology, vocabulary, and comprehension using widely available resources.
