This 10 hour/PDPs professional development course unpacks the process of orthographic mapping and provides educators with practical instructional strategies to build automatic word recognition skills among developing and struggling readers. At the conclusion of the course participants will be able to:
- Describe orthographic mapping and the role it plays in reading achievement.
- Convey the component skills that contribute to orthographic mapping, like phonemic awareness and phonemic proficiency.
- Use a validated assessment tool called the Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST) to measure students’ phonemic proficiency and plan instruction.
- Deliver instructional routines that support the development of phonemic proficiency skills, and efficient mapping techniques for phonetically regular and irregular words.
