[PDPs] Science of Reading and Structured Literacy in K-2

Course Commitment. 15 hours

Course Duration. 6 months to complete coursework from June 1, 2025 or enrollment date.

Access to Decoding Duo Lessons. Participants will select one manual and receive free digital access for 6 months. 

Earning PDPs. Upon completing all coursework you will automatically receive a Professional Development Point certificate for 15 PDPs. You will not receive graduate credit for this course.  

Course Overview

Grounded in the Science of Reading, this course emphasizes the critical role of integrating phonics instruction with vocabulary, syntax, morphology, fluency and comprehension. Each lesson not only teaches each skill in isolation but applies students' knowledge to decodable texts.   

Through a hands-on, high-leverage approach to small group instruction, you’ll learn to:

  • Teach key reading strategies to move students from decoding sound by sound to mapping sight words. 

  • Implement strategic vocabulary instruction with a focus on multiple meaning words. 

  • Teach syntactic awareness to support students' ability to fluently read phrases and comprehend text.  

  • Guide students in spelling multisyllabic words.

  • Plan and deliver multi-component Structured Literacy lessons that focus on phonics, vocabulary, syntax, spelling and comprehension.

  • Six months of access to pre-planned comprehensive structured literacy routines through the Decoding Duo digital manual of your choices.

Whether you're a classroom teacher, interventionist, or literacy coach, this course offers a clear, actionable framework to help students meet the increasing literacy demands of grades K-2.
