[GRADUATE CREDIT] The Science of Reading and Small Group Structured Literacy 3-6

Grounded in the Science of Reading, this course emphasizes the critical role of morphology, vocabulary development, and advanced word work in reading success.

Through a hands-on, high-leverage approach to small group instruction, you’ll learn to:

  • Teach advanced word work  using syllabication strategies and the six syllable types in English.

  • Implement strategic vocabulary instruction using active processing techniques and the Frayer model.

  • Teach morphological awareness, including the most common prefixes, suffixes, and root words, and how they apply to decoding and comprehension.

  • Guide students in spelling multisyllabic words through encoding strategies and affix rules (Double Rule, Drop-E Rule, Change Y Rule, and more).

  • Plan and deliver multi-component Structured Literacy lessons that focus on morphology, vocabulary, and comprehension using widely available resources.

  • Six months of access to pre-planned comprehensive structured literacy routines through the Morphology Anthology digital manual of your choices.

Whether you're a classroom teacher, interventionist, or literacy coach, this course offers a clear, actionable framework to help students meet the increasing literacy demands of grades 3–6.

Graduate Credit (1) is available through Gordon College for an additional fee of $75. Participants enrolled in graduate credit will need to complete one additional assignment outside of required coursework.

Once you register for the course you will receive instructions on registering for graduate credit.

What People Are Saying:

Thank you for all that you taught me to help my students. The structured literacy template saved them. I know that sounds dramatic, but it's the truth. There were 4 students in my group that struggled with learning basic skills, like short a words. You gave me a starting point and a focus, but then you gave me "permission" to use less to teach them more. Once we figured out the 4 day format was working, the magic began. I am including the beginning of the year DIBEL scores along with their end of the year scores. Their teacher and I cried today, because it's not just their academic progress, but their confidence has increased greatly. They went from barely whispering at times and trying to blend in to the background, to raising their hands and volunteering to show everyone how to read a word. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you notice, many of their scores are JUST below benchmark...their progress is AMAZING!!!
