This graduate course provides elementary educators, supporting students reading at 3rd-5th grade levels, with resources to deliver differentiated, small group structured literacy instruction.
The course utilizes a lesson template that focuses on:
- Multisyllabic words
- Prefixes, suffixes & roots
- Vocabulary
- Grammatical instruction.
Participants will be taught how to plan 15 minute lessons that offer students practice with single word, phrase, sentence and passage reading.
The course derives content from the text P.S. Prefixes, Suffixes and Roots by Diane Hickey Gold, Elaine Russo, Linda Wallace & Judy Shapiro which should be purchased separately (approx. $50 USD)

Course Outline
Module 1: Introduction to Key Ideas from “The Science of Reading” Research (2 hours self-guided)
Module 2: Effective Components of the ELA Block including Use of Explicit Instruction (2 hours self-guided)
Module 3: Utilizing Data to Plan Targeted Small Group Instruction (2 hours self guided)
Module 4: Planning Small Group Structured Literacy Routines that focus on
